Attic heat

Radiant barriers

Reflective foil fastened under your roof deck to block the heat that radiates down from hot shingles. Less heat reaches your attic, your insulation and your ductwork.

How it works

Blocks radiant heat, works with insulation

On a sunny day, your roof deck heats up and radiates that heat down into the attic. A radiant barrier reflects most of it back before it reaches the attic floor.

It doesn't replace insulation. Insulation slows heat moving through materials. A radiant barrier blocks radiant heat. They work best together.

We staple the foil to the underside of the rafters, foil side down, with an air gap below the roof deck. We don't lay it on top of attic floor insulation, where it collects dust and can trap moisture.

5–10%

Cooling cost savings some studies show for radiant barriers in warm, sunny climates.

What's included

What an install covers

  • Attic inspection

We check the roof deck, ventilation and attic access.

  • Coverage plan

We measure the roof slopes and gables to be covered.

  • Foil under the rafters

Stapled foil side down, with an air gap below the roof deck.

  • Vents kept clear

Soffit, ridge and gable vents stay open so the attic can breathe.

  • Cleanup

Scraps and packaging come out of the attic with us.

  • Walk-through

We show you the finished coverage.

How the job goes

From first call to finished

  1. 01

    Inspect

We look at your roof deck, insulation depth and ventilation.

  2. 02

    Plan coverage

We measure the areas to cover and list them in your quote.

  3. 03

    Install

Foil is stapled to the underside of the rafters, leaving an air gap.

FAQ

Questions about radiant barriers

Don't see yours? Call (940) 245-6139 and ask us directly.

Will a radiant barrier lower my bills?

It can lower cooling costs. Some studies show 5 to 10% savings in warm, sunny climates. Results depend on your roof, attic ventilation and where your ductwork is.

Radiant barrier or more insulation?

If your attic insulation is thin, add insulation first. A radiant barrier is a good next step once the insulation is at full depth.

Can it go on top of my insulation?

We don't recommend it. Foil laid on the attic floor collects dust, which cuts its effectiveness, and it can trap moisture in the insulation below.

Do I need one with spray foam?

Usually not. If your roof deck is foamed, the attic is already insulated at the roofline, so a radiant barrier adds little.
