How it works

Moves hot air out, powered by the sun

A solar attic fan is a roof vent with a small solar panel that runs the fan. When the sun is strongest, the fan pulls hot air out and draws outside air in through the attic's intake vents.

Fans only help when the attic has enough intake vents and the ceiling below is sealed. Without those, a fan can pull air conditioned air up through gaps in your ceiling. We check both before we recommend one.

Solar fans don't belong in an attic sealed with spray foam. That attic is part of your conditioned space and shouldn't be vented.

FAQ

Questions about solar attic fans

Don't see yours? Call (940) 245-6139 and ask us directly.

Do solar attic fans really work?

They can lower attic temperatures in a vented attic with good intake vents and a sealed ceiling. They don't replace insulation and won't fix a poorly insulated attic.

Will it cause a roof leak?

The opening is flashed and sealed the same way any roof vent is. Ask us about it during the inspection and we'll show you how it's done.

Does it run at night?

Most solar fans run only while there's enough sunlight to power them.

Can I add one to a spray-foamed attic?

No. A foamed attic is sealed on purpose. Venting it would undo the air seal.
